Times to Cover Fast Pit Operations With Shortwave

. Sets Up Network of Five Transmitters

For the first time in “500” history, The Indianapolis Times this year is using radios to cover the far-flung pit operations. Working with the Motorola Radio Corp., the world’s largest manufacturer of portable radio transmitting equipment, The Times set up a complete network of five transmitters and receivers to cover the pit operations. Four reporters working with self-contained 9';3-pound sending and receiving sets will cover the area. There they interview drivers and crews and flash their news to' a radio co-ordinator who will be stationed at a main station high in the paddock.

Batteries Used

The portable radios are powered by three small batteries and six flashlight cells. Although long range is not required for the race operation they will send a signal
