The Mature Parent—

Action Is the Only Language Angry Child Can Understand

By MURIEL LAWRENCE ; NOT LONG AGO I had dinner with some friends who

have three boys. As their mother finished serving the

cake, Toby, her youngest, howled with indignation over |

the size of the slice his oldest brother got. “Behave yourself,” Toby's mother said. “You had a slice at lunch and Bill didn’t.”

But Toby was in no state to consider the question of fair distribution. . All he

could see was a bigger piece of cake. So he ignored his mother, reached over the table, and pushed his brother's glass of milk on to the floor.

Toby’s father did not pursue

the social value of self-control. He just rose from his chair and carried Toby off to a room where his uncivilized motions could expend themselves without endangering more glassware. Half an hour later, when a small voice called to his dad from the stair, Toby's father again rose from his chair. This time he went to his child to make the case for fair distribution and self-control. ” 2 2

Mrs. Lawrence

. TOBY IS 5 years old. When

he is not angry, he does quite well at expressing himself in civilized language. But when he is angry, he reverts to primitive language of violence, of force. He grabs at what he wants;

reasons for not giving them their own way, we are not, as we so fondly believe, showing ourselves to be patient and kindly. We are showing ourselves as pompous as a tourist in a foreign country who takes

pride in refusing to talk the

language of that country. ” ” ” { MANY OF OUR failures to discipline youngsters stem from our feeling that action is beneath our dignity. We see no loss of dignity in getting down on the floor and helping a child build a childish block house. We see no loss of

stature in reading a fairy tale | we have read a hundred times, |

We see none in feeding the baby who can’t feed himself. Why then do you suppose we find it so hard to stoop from our adult position on reason and logic to speak to a child's rage in terms he can understand?

and Mrs. George Klein, Elizabeth and Austin Brown, Mrs. J. A. Goodman, Anne and Fritz Taylor, Lucina and Sam Moxley and Mr. and Mrs. John Sloan Kittle, Mrs. Kittle in a stunning gold shantung suit. Among a number of parties a week ago last night was an informal one given by Marjorie Gundersen for Rosalie and Philip Willkie at which the guest of honor wore a deep rose chiffon frock. The Dramatic Club annual meeting at Woodstock was smaller than usual because of so many other gatherings. Actually it was gayer because of more room for dancing. Summer evening clothes are somehow the most flattering of all. One saw a lot of embroidered organdie, many prints, either with matching stoles or drapery over one shoulder. Estelle Chambers wore one of the latter. She and Dave are anticipating their move into the house they have vecently bought from the Alfred Norrises. Since we built and lived in it many years, it is nice for us to know that it is still in the hands of good friends. Alfred and Adeline have a house in Williams Creek.

Gray Frock

GIVNY WILLIAMS frock was a gray em-

broidered organdie while Mary Elizabeth Benham chose a black bolero and white organdie skirt with stand-out black flowers. She had a successful birthday party behind her of 26 children from nine months to six years -and not a tear. Quite an accomplishment. George Fortheringham was elected president for the club’s 62d year. Isabel Ayres, who as vice president will have charge of the parties, wore an adorable blue-green taffeta gown, draped on one h

It was good to have Mary and Phil Schaff in town for the party. Mrs. Clifford Whitehouse, formerly of Hampton, Va., and a courtesy member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Indiana, wore a striking outfit at the Society's annual meeting at Woodstock Club on Tuesday. The print of her dress, in navy, white and a touch of yellow, was repeated in her sailor hat, bound and veiled in Alice blue, and in her bag which had the same shade of blue backing and handle. Mrs. Frederick Rose, Mrs. Edmund Ball and Mrs. Frederick Petty, all of Muncie, and Mrs. Henry Brooke Sale of Ft. Wayne were among out-of-town members at the meeting.

Re-elect Officers

MRS. HENRY BUTTOLPH heads the re-

elected officers. Directors chosen were Mrs. Sylvester Johnson, Miss Belle Dean, Mrs. Benjamin D. Hitz, Mrs. William J. Young and Mrs. Booth Jameson. Recent widely divergent activities include the tea on Wednesday for the women of St. Catherine’s Guild of Trinity Church givén annually by Mrs. James Carroll and the Sub Deb Club dance at Westlake. This was a gala affair with each member's name on a wing of the big butterflies used for decoration and a party at Jane Collett’'s to start the evening. Among attractive Indianapolis women I saw in French Lick for the threeday conference of the Indiana Manufacturers Association wera Mrs. J. A. Eperlding, Mrs. Garvin Brown, Mrs. Keyes W. Atkins and Mrs. W. B. Elliott. s Mrs. Elliott wears an enchanting bangle bracelet of gold coins collected . from interesting places.
