Sermon of the Week—
‘People Who Tip God’
Scripture: “Offer unto God the sacrifice of thanksgiving: and pay thy vows unto the most High: and call upon me in the day of trouble; 1 will deliver thee and thou shalt glorify me.” IT IS STRANGE how ~ many people try to get by with tipping the Lord occasionally as they do those who serve them. us. From the beginning of time men have offered sacrifices unto their gods. The Hebrew people were no exception, They dffered bullocks, he goats, lambs, turtledoves, and pigeons unto Jehovah. The psalmist tells us that God was not displeased with the offerings which they brought, but with the manner | in which their sacrifices were offered and the motives that prompted them to make their sacrifices,
A SACRIFCE, to be wothy of the name, must be something of value, something prized highly. The blemished lamb and the gleanings from the field were not acceptable. The lamb must be without spot or blemish and only the first fruits of the harvest were acceptable. The alabaster box and the widow's mite were acceptable: and precious because they represented sacrifice, A sacrifice of thanksgiving is a sacrifice that is prompted by gratitude, given not because one must but because the worshiper is grateful to Almighty God for all his blessings. God does not need our gifts, for every beast of the forest is his and the cattle upon a thousand hills. What God wants is an expression of our gratitude. If gratitude and thanksgiving be wanting, our gifts are meaningless. Now, as then, God is asking us to offer unto Him sacrifices of thanksgiving. He no longer asks us to bring bullocks and lambs and offer them upon an altar. Jesus’ death upon the Cross has changed that. God wants us to offer to Him our time, our talents, our money,
‘ our lives,
We can give a great deal of time to the work of the church and the kingdom, but unless we are prompted by gratitude and motivated by love, our offering of time is not a sacrifice of thanksgiving. ~ » »
WHAT IS TRUE of our time may be equally true of our talents and money. Many people, when asked to serve on a committee or when elected to an office in the church, accept the responsibility grudgingly and serve half-heartedly. They accept because they feel they
