Faper Stops Air

Cy Bditer, Ft. Worth Press (A Secripps-Howard Newspaper)

FT. WORTH, May 17 Censorshpi is like a Texas prairie fire. You can put it. out when it first starts, but maybe not when it spreads. We put out a prairie fire of censorship this week on the Ft. Worth Press. It had its beginning in the May 6 crash in.Albuquerque, N. M,, of a B-36 bomber from Craswell Alr Force Base here. ; ~ Twenty-three men died, most of then men with wives and childrenwin Ft. Worth: Press re“porters interviewed more than a dozen next-of-kin. We dug tor human angles, the -liffle things 'that keep a casualty from being a mere statistic and make him “a man and a neighbor. We photographed three flies of survivors and ran 12 col umns of stories and pictures, The job done, Editor Walter R. Humphrey posted an office memo “Well planned. Well executed Good reading.” # General Disagrees Out at the Carswell hase, Maj. Gen. Samuel E. Anderson, commanding general of the Eighth Air Force, read the stories and disagreed. % He issued an order which said in effect, that the Press reporters were barred from the base and public-information officers were to answer all questions with “no “comment.” The order did not apply to the competing ¥t. Worth newspaper, which skipped most of the human side of the news and ran no family pictures. Gen. Anderson made no complaint to the press. He didn't call Editor Humphrey to talk it, over. He didn’t bother to tell us the news lockout was on. The General rang down the] brass curtain and let a press reporter bump into it Thursday!

with “no comment’ from a public information officer, I sent two reporters to find out what caused the trouble, Air police wouldn't let them in. Some hints came from our air men friends,” The picture began to clear up. It was censorship. Put It to Readers Editor Humphrey wrote an editorjal, putting the {issue before the Press readers as their problem whether this newspaper could be gagged. I wrote a story link ing the censorship with the crash and the May 7 coverage. Then he took the facts to ‘the Press’ Washington staff, writer; Marshall McNeill. Jje laid the censorship «case “before Clayton Fritchey, 1)%e f ¢'n se Department director of public: information; Brig. Gen. Sary Smith, Air Force

«director of public relations, and others, The word reached Ajr Secretary Thomas J. Finletter, An investigation got going on’ the double and Mr. Fritchey said

he'd have the ban lifted, He did. Carswell public information officers forgot their “no copament.” Yes, Gen. Anderson would be glad to meet a Press reporter, Marshall I.ynam, the reporter, went back to his beat after six days. The Press pictured Mr, Lynam entering the base, where he talked to (Gen. Anderson now has instituted a plan to have personal affairs officers at the home of each ngxt-of-kin to deal newspaper people seeking human interest copy.. 3 Editor Humphrey says he hopes it works out, “The threat of military censorship is still present. Personal affairs officers presumably will not be trained in handling news.
