Guest Soloist Arrives After
Trip From Chicago
Y BUTLER hy a long-time precedent by be-
ing a few minutes late starting last night's concert at the
Athenaeum. Reason: Eugene Conley,
fore curtain time after a wild trip by air
from Chicago. Mr. Conley had been singing in Matropolitan's “Fledermaus” in Chicago this afternoon, after which he took off like a bat for Tndiaffapolis. Clarence Elbert and the Maennerchor - began sedately enough ‘With the Pilgrim's Chorus from “Tannhaeuser,” a “Hymn to the Night" not too tastefully adapted
from the second movement of Beethoven's ‘‘Appassionata’” Sonata,. and “The Summons,” by Noble. Adjusts Cuffs
Mr. Conley then came on stage adjusting his cuffs and smoothing the lapels Hf his tailcoat. Giving no sign of breathlessness after the dash from the Windy City, he began the program’ 8 sec: end group with “Una furtiva| lagrima” from Donizetti's ‘Elisir| d’Amore.” Despite the subdued atmosphere of most of that area, the “furtive tear” shed by the] tenor would summon a crowd anywhere -but in Italian opera.| Mr. Conley manages this grandi-ose-emotional style with great] skill, particularly since his voice has a somewhat lighter quality than the traditionally bellowsome tenors imported from overseas. ‘Sound an Alarm’ “He concluded the group with #Sound an Alarm,” del’s “Judas Maccabeus,” one of “his finest performances of the evening. I confess to a slight
bias in favor of oratorio style as'
against operatic style in tenor ~singing, and I think Mr. Conley has impoverished oratorio, which certainly pays poorly, to enrich opera. Group III again brought Mr, Elbert and the choristers on stage for a couple of unaccompanied .numbers, which are not the Maennerchor’s long suit. Without accompaniment, the singers ave a “Drang nach der Tiefe,
pitch-sag, which needs correction. But they fniished the group
“with one of their biggest hits to date: “There .Is Nothing Like a Dame,” from “South Pacific,” in sa somewhat expurgated version This really]
