Anxiety Hurts

Says Educator

Urges Guiddnce For School Pupils

Anxiety for the future as the result of unsettled world conditions has beén noted among the high school youth of the United States. Dr. Robert R. Sears, professor of education, child psychologist and director of the laboratory of human: development at Harvard" “Rilsersity, said this. has ‘been especially true for boys in the near-service age. Dr. Sears arrived here yesterday to address Indianapolis teachers in Shortridge High School. | Also here was Dr. Francis Kep-| pel, dean of the Harvard gradu-| ate school of education, who! spoke at Manual High School. Can't Be Sure “Many high school boys look on (armed) service as something permanent,” Dr. Sears said. “They don’t know whether they are going to war,’ college or work.” One of the major problems in education today is to maintain the interest of those age groups and help them see that ‘this isn’t forever,” he said. He explained that news of the world, on the surface, offers youth an outlook of chaos forever. ‘He said they must be shown that in reality it may only be for another two or three years—that they have a long life to live afterward. Cites Educator's Role Dr. Sears emphasized the im-

In the last decade, he said, more recognition has been given this role and the work that can be done through establishment of psychological service centers. : Dr. Keppel said years of unstable conditions also may account for increasing interest and new trends in the teaching and study of American history and the social sciences. “The social sciences are stepping out of their dream world,” he said. Most educators agree on the | objectives of the social sciences. Dr. Keppel said, but the means of attaining the goal may differ.
