Council OKs $1,750,000 For Airport Work
$3 Million Weir Cook Expansion Over Hurdle
A $3,190,000 expansion of Weir (Cook Municipal Airport was virtually assured last night as City
jesue for the Aviation Board. New hangars, runways and a rebuilt administration will be constructed with funds provided by the city and $1,440,000 of matching U. 8. funds. The first of two $500,000 bond ordinances to pay for street repairs and improvement also was approved by the Council as it voted $2,250,000 in financing measures. | The street bond money is expected to be available about July 15. A second $500,000 bond request
be ready about Aug. 1. In other action, the Council gave final approval to an ordinance making Meridian St. an expressway. The measure bans all left turns. Traffic Engineer Frank Gallagher stated last night that signs prohibiting the turns, thus making the ordinance effective, will go up in October. Boost Taxi Fares Tax! fares were boosted approximately 12 per cent. The Council approved new rates call-
ing for 35 cents for the first three-fifths of a mile and 10 cents for each additional two-fifths mile. Taxi firm spokesmen nave
estimated the increase will boost the average trip cost from about 80 cents to about 90 cents. An enabling ordinance for the Housing Authority of Indianapolis was submitted for the first time. This action basically is a formality in the financing procedure required before the Authority can go forward with construction of new low-cost rental units. Also submitted was a resolution to approve trolley bus routes required to implement one-way street proposals. Approv#l of the changes is expected at the next meetinng of the council Mav 21 with the first of one-wav street changes to take effect 30 davs later. Other measures submitted last night call for the annexation of a South Side area bounded by Madison Ave. and Brill St., and Southern and Troy Aves.: and a North Side section on 524 St., including the Frazee Home Place and the Malott Park Addition. Another new ordinance would limit train speeds inside Indianapolis to 30 miles an hour. This measure will come up for passage
