Gites Danger In U. S. Going Ahead Alone

Disputes General Point by Point

ree By-Fnited Press «TTT WASHINGTON, dent Truman told the nation last night an atomic war with Russia Is “a real possibility,” but it would be more likely under the policies of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Mr. Truman said atomic warfare might wipe out some of the nation’s major cities and “I do not want to be responsible for bringing that about.” Mr. Truman declared his position in a speech, which was broadcast nationally, before a meeting of civil defense officials. The President didn't mention his ousted Far Eastern commander by name, but he turned down, point by point, the measures Gen. MacArthur has advocated for extending the Korean conflict to Communist China. Gen. MacArthur urged the bombing of Red bases in Man-

blockade of China and "use of Nationalist troops from Formosa. And, the General said, if necessary we should go it alone. Cites His Reasons Mr. Truman gave his reasons for rejecting such proposals. Among them, he said, it might: ONE: Lead to a bigger and longer war in Asia, with enormously increased casualties. TWO: Endanger Japan and the Philippines and “unite the Chinese people behind their Communist rulers.” . THREE: Lose allies against communism in Europe and leave the United States to ‘go it dlone.” He said that if “we go it alone in Asia” we may destroy the unity of free nations. “The path of collective security is our only sure defense against the dangers that threaten us,” he said. “It js the path to peace in Korea; it is the path to peace in the world.” The President took cognizance of the angry debate in Congress which followed his dismissal of Gen. MacArthur for publicly opposing the administration's conduct of the Korean War. He said that ‘a .lot of people look upon the debate -s if it was “just a political fight.” ‘Stakes More Important’ “But the stakes are a lot more important than the outcome of the election.” he said. “The thing that is at stake in this debate may be atomic war “Our foreign policy is not 2 political issue It is a matter of life and death. It 18 a matter of the Jguture of mankind.” Mr. Truman biuntv Gen. MacArthur's thesis United States go it alone “We cannot go and go it in company he declared.)
