Grip That Club Properly;

It's Vital to Your Game

By JIMMY DEMARET Three-Time Masters’ Winner

A firm grip plus a united ef-

fort of the hands is vital to a

successful game of golf. The shaft is placed in the left

hand so it is gripped between the §

palm and fingers. Neither the palm nor the fingers contribute any more or less force or pressure. They share it equally.

8 2 ” THE fingers of the left hand do not wrap around the club handle. The last three fingers do most pf the work in holding the club. This is very important. As I stressed in the P. G. A. Teachers’ Guide, a bad mistake made by many is relaxing these fingers at the top of the swing, when the wrists are fully cocked.

” 2 2 THIS throws the entire swing off, often causes the club to twist ‘or turn from the original position. When the left hand is closed, the thumb should be pointing to the right side of the shaft. ° The thumb .and index finger should form a V pointing to the right shoulder. Without moving your head from its natural position for the stroke, see if the first three knuckles of your left hand are visible. If so, your hand is far enough over the shaft. That's an old test.

- 5 os AS THE right hand is affixed to the club for the overlapping grip, the little finger overlaps the index finger of the left. As the hand is closed, the thumb should be about one-fourth of the way around the shaft. Most of the pressure with the
