It is absolutely necessary should a discharged patient return later for treatment of the same disorder, and is a great help if the patient returns suffering from something else. But training medical record librarians in college is a comparatively new educational venture —and brand-new in Indiana. Four-Year Course The old apprentice system gave way- this year to a special course offered by Indiana University, in which the student follows three years of study at Bloomington with a year of practical experience at IU Medical Center here. Miss Gertrude Gunn, head of the department at IU Medical Center, is a pioneer in the field. So is Miss Norma Baumann, head of the department at Methodist Hospital, a past president of the American Association of Medical Record Librarians. Miss Gunn accompanied an original staff of 13 physicians from the University of Minnesota in 1943 to Oak Ridge, Tenn. where the atomic project was just beginning. There, they set up the hospital and ¢linic that was to protect a force of work-| men eventually reaching 76,000 at one time. “When we got there, our hospital was a hole in the ground,” said Miss Gunn, who sét up and ran the medical record section. Helps Smaller Hospitals ._..She—came-to Indianapolis in| - 1948, and immediately began agitating for a medical record course at the university. Success came in two years. Miss Baumann, as chairman of the Guidance Committee of the national association, is the target of many requests for personnel. Last year, she arranged for girls keeping medical records in small Indiana hospitals to make monthly training trips here| to “Methodist Hospital. The program is continuing this year. “We can’t catch up with the demand,” said Miss Baumann. “There are 1800 RRL’s in the United States, and 7000 hospitals.” The woman (or man) who elects medical records as a profession will play an increasing role in new medical findings and the fight against death and disease.
