Timely After 12 Years— Butler Play ‘Reality’

‘The Male Animal" Still

Plenty of Vitality

By HENRY BUTLER The Butler Student Players last nizht opened a creditable “round” production of “The Male Animal” in Atherton Center on the Fairview campus. Directed by Howard L. Grigsby of the speech depart-

ment, they do very well with the James Thurber-Elliott ~

Nugent comedy of college life that still. is timely after

some 12 years. As everybody remémbers, the play concerns the male

~ponfifetrheiween-—rains—akd-brawn, always an. issue on ‘any

campus, For comedy value, Messrs. Thurber and Nugent mercifully

allow brains to simulate brawn and hence win a dubious triumph. The underlying battle between free ideas and fixed ideas, how-' ever, 1s not resolved in the play. Nor, for that matter, in life. Hence “The Male Animal” still has vitality at a time when too many persons who think with their muscles want to dictate what college professors shall say. This production in the hand-| gome new Atherton Center, which] I hadn't seen before last night, | has the merit of reality. It actu-|

ally seems better than it might if)

For just one item, lighting isn’ eT lr

good. There's glare from spot-| lights that might be lessened by| better and doubtless more costly, equipment. For another item, the! long distances actors must tra-| verse to the central stage make them short-winded when they ar-| rive. Despite these drawbacks, actors in Mr. Grigsby's production do quite well when they're convinced of what they're doing.
