Game Can End Quickly When Partners Accumulate Cards of Same Few Ranks

“I DON'T believe in luck,” writes an Austin, Tex., correspondent, “especially when that luck continues for a very long time. My next-door neighbor and his wife keep winning, so. 1 know they must be better than we are. ‘But I can’t discover the secret of their success. “Here's what happens in about one deal out of every three. My wife and I get the first discard pile and get down with a few nice-looking melds. It looks as though we ought to make at least one canasta very quickly.-.and. perhaps run up. a. really big score. : “Suddenly the hand lapses. “One of our friendly enemies puts down a meld, and in one or two more plays: the hand is over! Walter P. Piegat, Merrill ville, heads some 1800 fed-
erated junior clubwomen in the state. That's by virtue of her office as third vice president of the Indiana Federation of Clubs. But 32-year-old Clarmae Piegat does much more than execute the specified duties of her office. : Since her election at last vear's convention in French Lick, she's been a champion of her juniors and their projects. 2
conferencé, meeting here with the 61st annual IFC conven- | tion, has drawn 79 delegates, has had a four-day -program. In 1945 there was a handful of junior clubwomen, a halfday session. It's small wonder the senior group is proud of the 71 junior clubs, a gain of five over last year, ahd reports of its activities, presented by hard working Mrs. Piegat.
Cites Responsibility
Speaking for the General Federation, Mrs, Oscar A. Ahlgren, Whiting. first vice president, says ‘‘the future
of the federation depends on them.” Moreover, she believes their program is-a training school for leadership, that through it they accept responsibility in the local community. This year Hoosier juniors have supported their own state project of putting germicidal lamps in schools. They also have given some $1900 to thé senior program.
