LOUISVILLE, Ky.. Apr. 8 With the Kentucky Derby just a week away, there were at least 26 candidates for the big race on hand at Churchill Downs today and not a solid favorite in (he bunch.

As the Downs opened a 19-day spring meeting topped by the 77th running of the Derby next Saturday, Derby hopefuls began to fill the stalls in the low green barns on the back side of the Downs. Coming in today were W. C. Martin's Phil D.. from Keeneland. and Timely Reward from New York. Another possible arrival ‘was the King Ranch second stringer, Long Bow.
