City's Golf Year

Courses Get Big Rush; Well-Stocked Shops

First Big Event Here Will Be 3d Leg - Of Weathervane Tournament May 18-19. By JIM HEYROCK

Indianapolis’ private and public golf course professionals have a Hy

rugged six months ahead of them.

From the looks of the crowds that swarmed to golf courses last} week when the first spring days arrived, this year is going to be the

biggest yet in golf here. And all courses are in excellent condition. Pro shops are well stocked, feeling the pinch of a national emergency only slightly. ©

Pros Listed

None of the professionals in the Indianapolis area changed Ts courses this year and all are at & 4 the same courses as last season. Here are pros at the Indianapolis § courses: Tommy Vaughn, Hillcrest; Lou Rola, Highland; Bill Russell, South Grove; Ken Miles, Lake Shore; lim Vaughn, Pleasant Run; Wayne Timberman, Meridian §8 Hills; Paul Gross, Sarah Shank; Marion Smith, Indianapolis i Country Club; Gil Gividen, Woodstock; Noel Epperson, Broadmoor; Wally Nelson, Riverside; Mike Pollak, Coffin; Chuck Garringer, Speedway. First golfing event with a national flavor in Indianapolis will ‘:§ be the third leg of the Weather- ° vane Tournament, May 18 and 19 at Meridian Hills.

Top Women Stars

Two of the top women’s golfers in this area were named yesterday tn play with the country’s leading professionals and amateurs in the Weathervane here. i They are Jane Nelson, women's city champion, and Donna Knox, 17-year-old Broad Ripple High School student. Other local and state golfers will be named later. Dorothy Ellis is chairman of the event here. The $3000 in prizes is being donated by the tournmament sponsors and all proceeds here will go to the Marion County Servicemen's Center. Deadline for entries is May 7.

Anglers to Get

ru

Hoosier fishermen are going to get a break. From now on they'll receive last - minute reports on state fishing conditions. Conservation officers in eight different localities will report their findings to the Conservation Department's public relations division late each Thursday evening. Thus an accurate picture of prevailing conditions will be provided. The outlook i= good this week. Large- and small-mouth bass, bluegills and silver bass are reported ready to bite in Lakes Freeman and Shafer. Similar conditions hold throughout the state. Best results are being obtained with live bait, flies, plugs and spinners. i Only discondant note in the picture is that the season on bass, rock bass and silver bass closes tomorrow. Clearing waters has helped. However, some sections report clouded and milky conditions. It Goesn't seem to be bothering anglers along the Wabash, Tippecanoe and White Rivers, though. ! Those rivers and all smaller streams in the state are producing good catches. |
