Is Milestone
A milestone in movie-making is the production of ‘The Great Caruso,” which has given the same boost to grand opera that “The Red Shoes” gave to ballet. With Mario Lanza in the role of Enrico Caruso, the film gives a full-blown, full-color, full-scope and slightly fictionalized version of the great Italian tenor’s life. “The Great Caruso” is the result of several years’ effort on the part of MGM studios. Took a Flyer Although Lanza was not slated for the role until several years hence, he progressed so rapidly in his musical and dramatic chores that the studio took a flyer and cast him in the role now. It was a wise decision. il For the sake of the small fry, Esqui |“The Great Caruso” is probably quire {the best course in fine Tousle ap " " reciation ever des! 0 THE DANCING YEARS De on the io EAght ye he termed “pop opera,” and in some : instances you can recognize the melodies as having been lifted recently for fickle fame on the Hit ON THE SCREEN—First-run film features for the coming week Parade. include: George Montgomery and Paula Corday in “Sword of Monte Cristo" (Lyric, Thursday), Melvyn Douglas and Janis Carter in "My Forbidden Past" (Circle, Thursday), Greta Gynt and Stewart
