into bus practices during the 1951 General Assembly. The Senate, at the close of the 1951 session, unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a two-

year probe of bus safety practices and submission of a proposed Bus Safety Code to the

1953 body for approval. The resolution was introduced by Sen. Milford Anness, Metamora, chairman ofthe Senate Public Safety Committee. From his home near Claypool, Mr. Stevens today promised a thorough look into bus practices. * ‘A Lot of Work’ “I think there's a to do on the matter.” said, “I especially want to check the mechanical condition of the busses. That's the critical end. Mr. Conrad said his work on the Senate comm ttee had stirred his interest in the investigation. “I think there's a definite need for more investigation if what the committee members heard is true,” he said “I'l begin as soon as I can get to Indianapolis.” The Senate committee began an inquiry into bus practices following evidence laid before committee members by The Times that suburban bus lines operating out of Indianapolis daily were violating safety laws and practices. Complaints made to The Times stated that the lives of thousands of passengers were endangered because some bus companies were lax in mechanical upkeep of their vehicles. No Safety Code No safety code exists now in Indiana to compel bus lines to follow the precautions demanded from inter-city bus and truck lines by the Interstate Commerce Commission. State Public Service Commission officials. although charged with overseeing safety of busses as well as trucks, testified that thair main interest was in enforcement of the fee system ‘and in holding trucks to specified routes.
