We, the Women— Education Seen Factor In Happy Married Life

By RUTH MILLETT IS THE girl who gets both a college degree and a marriage license in June “wasting” her education? Parents sometimes think so. /. college senior writes: “My parents are terribly upset because I want to be married in June, a few days after I get my bachelor's degree. The boy I'm engaged to is graduating at the same time. and has a job lined up. “Mother and Dad have met and seem to like him all right. But they don't like the idea of my marrying without first having a chance—as they put it—to ‘use my education.’ “They came right out and said that if they had known I would be married as soon as I finished college they never would have sacrificed to send me away to school for four years. “We are very much in love and want terribly to be married and there is no Ruth Millett reason for waiting—except the way my parents feel about it. I feel indebted to them for my education and hate to hurt them. What do you think?” = - = - " w I THINK that it is easy to understand their feeling of disappointment, especially if they have dreamed of your taking up some special career.

But they shouldn't feel you are “wasting” your education by marrying as soon as you are through school. Four years of college should make you a better wife and mother. Your education should contribute to your happiness. It should fit you for becorging a worthwhile member of the community in which you live. And if you ever face the need of earning your own living, you have an educational background %hat win be a decided advantage to you. So you see, whether or not you “waste” your education depends on you. You can use it to as much advantage in the Job of home-maker as you could in any other job. Remember that and you can prove to your parents in time that the
