Outspokenness Marked Fiery Career

By United Press CHICAGO, Apr. 24—Charles G.

| Dawes, the “Hell 'N Maria” vice president under Calvin Coolidge, died late last night at his subur-

ban Evanston home of a heart attack, He was 85.

Mr. Dawes’ death came as he was preparing to make one of his rare public appearances in recent years as honorary chairman of the civic committee to welcome Gen. Douglas MacArthur's visit to Chicago next Thursday.

His wife, Caro, was with him when he died after suffering a coronary thrombosis attack. His | physician, Dr. George Dick, was summoned, but Mr. Dawes was dead by the time he arrived.

Police to Continue | Watching Place

Prosecutor Frank Fairchild sald today a gambling joint operated as the Avenue Cigar Store, 404 Indiana Ave, is being remodeled as a restaurant. His statement was in reply to a Sunday story in The Times which pointed out the place still operated gambling despite his order to the owner three months ago to halt the enterprise. “My investigators checked the place yesterday and found it was being remodeled as 4 restaurant,” Mr. Fairchild said. “It has a store license in the name of Houston Brown.”

He said the property owner, Charles Medias, had informed him the cigar store's lease had ex-| pired Feb. 1. It was leased to Archie Young. The prosecutor said his investigators would continue to check “the place for gambling activity. |
