Friends to Join in Program Honoring. Suzanne Repp
tree planting.
By MARGUERITE SMITH Times Garden Editor
THIS IS partly the story of Suzanne, who died. Suzanne who never joined her small friends in the big world
that is the first grade of school. But it's even more the story of adults who live. and work in a world much bigger than they. The place is Edgewood. More particularly, the 17 acres around Edgewood grade and primary school. Tuesday is an important time in its development. The story began several years ago. It's hard to say exactly where. Mrs. Delbert Willsey was in it from the beginning. Let her tell how a whole community is uniting to plan and plant and work to give their children an appreciation of nature, to give the community itself a recreation area.
Funds From Fish Fry
“WE STARTED talking about it in 1948" Mrs. Willsey recalls. “Mrs, Owen Johnson was president of our PTA then. The next year's president, Mrs. Floyd Lively, appointed me to get a landscaper. “Funds came from our annual PTA fish fry. «James Maschmeyer drew the plan. The PTA board quickly approved it. It calls for the planting of many trees, well away from play areas and baseball fields, and development of a picnic grove with ovens and tables: “We got 40 of the trees planted last fall.” Mrs. Willsey continued, “23 more are to be planted before Arbor Day this year (Friday), part of them during ceremonies on Tuesday afternoon. “The plans call for a wide variety of trees with emphasis on the native kinds so the children will get to know them. Near the primary school early flowering magnolias and crabs will be in

It is set now for next week end, Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 28 and 29. Luckily Holliday House was available again for this later date. Even the largest local TOW: ers report very few varieties in| bloom now. Arbor Day, now set by the legislature for Friday will be ob-| served by various tree planting] events.

John Repp, another memorial tree will be planted during the |
Tuesday program. Several of her little friends will take a special |
part. “Then other people gave and planted flowers. Five mothers set out chrysanthemum plants last fall. (They were Mesdames C. H. Kuhlman, Francis Schuster, L.. H. Dennerline, Albert Theil and Norman Stanley.)
Plant Several Bulbs
“A TROOP of Brownies under the direction of Mrs, Charles Rice planted a number of bulbs.” “In fact,” here Mrs. Katherine Sanders, primary principal, takes up the story, “we had quite a project from the bulb angle last fall. The children studied principles of design and planned bulb beds. They counted bulbs and studied numbers. Then they made up stories about the flowers. And some of their bulbs are
already in bloom just outside the windows. “We plan to add more bulbs each fall,” Mrs. Sanders went on. “We hope eventually we'll have acres and acres of jonquils
naturalized under the trees.”
Another enthusiastic booster is ‘Paul Bailey, “main building” —the upper grade school.
