By RAY AYRES United Press Sports Writer NEW YORK, Apr. 20—It took Greentree Etable’s Big Stretch quite a while to reach his peak form, hut in the fall of 1950 the son of Eight Thirty was one of the best around. The big, handsome colt, who easily could qualify as the ‘‘picture horse” Derby, went to the post six times before he was able to win, But he completed his juvenile campaign with a smashing triumph in the Pimlico Futurity, his fourth victory of the year in 1b races, Big Stretch was bred by Greentree, the racing establishowned by John Hay Whitney and his sister, Mrs. Charles Payson, and is a son of one of the leading stallions in the country. dam, does not lack class either, for she was a stakes winner during her racing days.

Although he continued to finish in the money in his next three starts, it wasn't until mid-July that he was able to win, scoring by seven lengths, From then on, with one exception, he only ran in stake events and after finishing third in the Albany Handicap and fourth in the United States Hotel stakes, he won the Sanford at Saratoga. By this time it was apparent that Big Stretch would show at his best over a distance. Away last in the Sanford and in tight quarters: in the early running, he finished with a long steady drive which carried him to a neck victory over Nullify.

But in the Futurity itself Big Stretch gave Battlefield quite a scare and it wasn't until the last jump that he bowed to the champion by inches. . In the Champagne Stake which followed, Big Stretch suffered interference during the race but still managed to finish fourth’ with Uncle Miltie the winner. He was bumped at the start and blocked off in the stretch, Gaver, who saddled Shut Out for his 1942 Kentucky Derby victory, then shipped Big Stretch to Kentucky for the Breeders Futurity at Keeneland. The horse won easily. And when Gaver then shipped Big Stretch to Maryland for the Pimlico Futurity, it was the same story. Big Stretch had all the distance he needed in the mile and a sixteenth stake and romped home by almost five lengths. ® un LJ
