Two Firms Add $12,500 to Lap Fund
By BILL EGGERT There's gold in them thar Bpeedway bricks again this year, The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is toying. with another record payoff for this year’s 500Mile Race, May 30, with the announcement that Firestone Tire & Rubber Co, and General Petroleum Corp. will put up $12,500 in accessory awards.
Fund Subscribed
The usual $20,000 lap prize fund has been subscribed. Speedway again-is offering a guaranteed purse of $75,000 with a bonus that gate receipts will justify. Last year Speedway’s purse share| was $154,900. The 1951 Firestone| awards will be $4000, first place;| $2000, second place; $1000, third] place; $500, fourth place and $500) fifth place. General Petroleum is offering $2500 to the winner if the car yses Mobil products. If the winning car qualifies for| the Mobil prize, a $1000 bonus also| will be paid for a new race record. | Additional awards of $500 will be| paid for the fastest qualifying] speed and the fastest lap while] leading the race if Mobil products! are used in the cars.
8 Cars at Track |
Meanwhile, Gasoline Alley ac-| tivity is expected to perk up néxt week. Three cars are at the track already—Johnnie Parsons’ Wynn Friction Proofing Oil Special; Freddie Agabashian’s GranatelliBardahl Special and the Joe Scopa! entry. The Palmer car and Lou Moore's two Blue Crowns are in town. i Meanwhile, Mechanic Johnny Ray is awaiting the engine for the Sampson car. It was not dam-| aged when owner Alden Sampson was killed in a traffic accident! Apr. 8 in Phoenix while enroute to Indianapolis. The car definite-| ly is in this year’s “500” although no driver has been nominated. Walt Ader drove it here last year.
