TOKYO, Apr. 19-—1Lt. Gen. 8ir Horace Robertson, commander of British Commonwealth occupation forces in Japan, sought today to disassociate himself from Gen. Douglas MacArthur's controversial Far Eastern policies. Some said Gen. Robertson's job was at stake because of re-

hours before Gen. MacArthur was fired by President Truman. Gen. Robertson issued two successive statements from his headquarters today in an attempt to clarify his position. In them, he insisted: ONE: He had not recommended hombardment of Chinese bases in Manchuria at the Apr. 10 conference. TWO: Whatever he said at the conference was still off-the-record because of “its obvious value to the enemy.” Correspondents wh o attended the disputed press conference sent dispatches summarizing Gen. Robertson’s remarks after news of them leaked out and was published abroad. “\ These dispatches were cleared by: censorship. They said Gen. Robertson had told newsmen confidentially that he agreed with some of Gen. MacArthur's policies. He was quoted as predicting “certain defeat” for the United Nations army in Korea unless United Nations pilots are permitted to bomb Manchurian bases, Under present conditions, he said, there were only alternatives—to pull out of Korea or be defeated. son begged Republicans to keep ‘the issue out of the national debate on foreign policy. The United States is thinking of a ‘defense alliance between America, Australia and New Zealand. Under tentative plans, an attack on any of these countries would be considered as an attack on all, It would not have all of the formal organization that the Atlantic alliance possesses. Mr. Acheson, in an address last night, said, “nothing done or said in the great Far Eastern debate should hinder this effort, because it is central to the security of the Pacific.” Truman Orders Hurry-Up President Truman ordered the hurry-up on Pacific defense plans —and assigned a Republican, John Foster Dulles, to do the negotiating for the United States. Mr. Dulles already is preparing a Japanese peace treaty —and the broader plans for a Pacific defense alliance to grow out of these negotiations. The United wants a Japanese treaty that will allow the Japanese unlimited rearmament and industrial expansion— but Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines indicated they might balk unless assured that Japan would not be able to start another war.
