By ELISE MORROW WASHINGTON, Apr. 14--The British Katharine Hepburn; a brittle young lady who is the daughter of Mr. Blood, Sweat, Toil’ and Tears, has been decorating the local salons as well

as the local theater. S ar ah

Churchill, oldeet girl - child of Great Britain’'s wartime prime minister, starred at the ¢capital's re - done burlesque house, The Gayety, in a play called “Gramercy Ghost.” She was a curiosity not only because of her own stature as an ‘actress but also because of her fortunate, or unfortunate, parental ties. Miss Churchill’s opening night party was not, as might have been expected, ot the British Embassy, but at the Wardman Park Hotel suite of Jack Baihle, a New York City advertising man, who is the brother of Miss Churchill's understudy, Ludie Claire. Mr. Baihle was also on the campaign staff of Sen. Estes Kefauver, the new national hero-lion; so the Kefauvers were among the guests. Which made two beautful redheads, one British — Miss Churchill — and one Scottish — Nancy Kefauver. The following day, Sen. and Mrs. Kefauver entertained in honor of Miss Churchill at luncheon in the Senate Dining Room. A reception in the former prime minister's honor is scheduled to be held at the British Embassy May 9th. There is some gnashing of teeth over this because, when he was last here, the Right Honorable Tory complained that large receptions wearied him. So how to keep him happy, while still not outraging Congressmen and Senators into cutting off Great Britain without a cent by not inviting them, is a problem.

MUCH TO SARAH ChurchilI's bored distress, everyone who meets her looks for similarities to her father. Fortunately - she does not resemble him physically, but looks rather more like her patrician, handsome mother, She seems to have, actually, some of the old man's driving, self - centered ambitiousness, without his balancing warmth and fire, She is a good actress, but technically, not emotionally. As with Miss Hepburn, her own ego appears to restrict her. She never melts into the part and makes herself it; she rises above it.

The Dancing Cuban

“MY, BUT you rhumba beau-

tifully,” remarked a pretty young woman to the Cuban Ambassador, Luis Machado, at a dinner dance this week. “Why, of course,” replied His Excellency logically and proudly. “I

am a Cupan!” Mr. Machado, with various other Latin-American ambassa-

dors and foreign ministers, has |!

had a heavy. unending social schedule during the past several weeks of inter-American

political and social accord. The entertaining of our good southern neighbors has gone through the. works—stag parties, ladies’ teas, dinners, cocktail parties, luncheons and receptions, There was a high level operation master-minded by Col. Sosthenes Behn, chairman of the International Telephone & Telegraph Corp. and a still higher level reception given by Mrs. Truxtun Beale. = = = COL. BEHN encamped in the luxurious wastes of the Shoreham Hotel's Terrace Room for his late afternoon party. He had one of the most interesting receiving lines imaginable, composed of his wife. his daughter, and two sons, plus Adm. William Halsey—not a member of the family. The guests included the visit-
