Youthful Ideas Inspire Two New Collections of Fabrics
Art Students Create Designs
By JEAN TABBERT YOUNG IDEAS inspired two provocative new fabric collections this spring. A 21-year-old graduate student of the Parsons School of Désign concocted the “Country Spuare” design shown right. Available at Ayres’, it's a bold, light-hearted pattern of large fruit. motifs set against a blocked background. Chalky white brush strokes and rough black outlines shape watermelons, persimmons, pineapples and lemons on colorful squares. * The decorative material was one of the prize patterns in the International Fabric Design Competition. A distinguished Jury of Awards selected the winners, which highlight the spring “Town and Country”. fabric group of the Colonial Drapery and Curtain Corp. Another Series -
Cheney Brothers, one of the | finest fabric houses, and the In- | stitute of Contemporary Arts, { did the scouting for young artists to design and interpret another series of prints on cotton, linen and silk. Young textile designers from all over the counfry worked on the Natura collection, a group of designs based on nature forms. Pictured are three. “Dandelion” is a spirited design, laid | out horizontally in strong, vib- | brant colors on glazéd chintz. { “Woodgrain,” an actual re- | production of the grain in wood shades from light to dark, giving a vertical, striped feeling.
Need Shelf? | Chi Here's Idea Mode
In response to the unending housewifely lament on the need for more shelf space in the kitchen, many novel approaches r= have been devised. If you have an empty corner or “unused straight wall space, till it by hanging unpainted bookcases, Arrange them according to the space available—using one, two or three bookcases. Paint the bookcases in a color to harmonize or contrast with the color of the rest of the kitchen woodwork and trim the shelves with a happy new shelving pattern. Use these as display areas for knick-knacks, or keep your most [§ attractive china stored there in! § display fashion.
