Millions More Now Covered, But Payments Are Made Only on Certain Conditions a CHAPTER ONE By HENRY SCHINDALL THESE ARTICLES may be worth several thousand dollars to you. ? not informed about the new and broadened Social Security system of the United States. It has just been given a thorough overhauling by Congress. The Social Security Administration is now operating under new rules. It is important for you to know of these changes, of the way Social Security now works. This is a good time for you to learn these facts of life. For, on or before Apr. 30. several million American housewives, farmers and small businessmen will be sending money for the first time to the Social Security agency. This money will cover pengions and other benefits. for housemaids., cooks, cleaning women, chauffers, full-time and some part-time farm hands. These people have never been “covered” before. It is essential that all these new “eligibles” know about the Social Security
law. - = "
BUT if you are one of those fortunate people who has been under Social Security for years, it is even more important to you than to the ‘newcomers’ for the amount involved is often much greater. A question I'm often asked: Why should I have to worry about Social Security? The government automatically starts paying me when I'm eligible for a pension or insurance, doesn’t it? The answer is an emphatic NO. Social Security benefits are NEVER “automatic.” You must apply for them at the proper time and at the right place. You will be paid only if several conditions specified in the law are met. To adapt a slogan of the prize ping for your Social Security: ®You must protect yourself at All times.” It would be much easier if Social Security took care of every detail for you. But that isn't provided by the law. You, yourself must start the wheels turning to receive the benefits
You may be doing just that. Particularly if you are

to which you are entitled. Nobody can do it for you. ” = = WHAT IS Social Security? Social Security is the general name given to the system intended to provide both a steady income, and family protection at a time when most people find it difficult to provide for themselves.
It is a form of social insurance, run by the United States government. The funds are provided by compulsory deductions from the pay envelopes of covered employees, by taxesof an equal amount levied on employers, and by contributions made by the self-employed. Unless you are covered by law, and make your proper contributions to the Social Security fund, you will receive no benefits whatsoever. » = » YOUR FIRST question, then, is— Am I covered by Security?

taken you under its wing, what benefits are available to those who meet the requirements? There are two general types of benefits: ONE: A steady monthly income after retirement at age 65. TWO: Payments to widows, children or parents upon death of the insured person. These two kinds of benefits are subject to a great many rules set up in the law, and vary considerably in different situations.
