Two B-29s Shot Down in Korea |

First Destroyed Bys Enemy Planes

WASHINGTON, Apr. 13 (UP) --The Air Force reported today that two B-29 bombers were shot down by enemy MIG-15 fighter plafies in the Sinuiju area In northwest Korea yesterday. They were the first four-engined; 17. 8. bombers shot down by enemy | aircraft in the Korean War, A spokesman told newsmen he’ had no report of crews, but assumed that all men aboard were lost. He said the bombers went

down on the Korean side of the Yalu River which divides Korea and Manchuria The spokesman said about 100 American F-88 and F-84 jet fighters and 32 B-29 bombers engaged

approximately 100 Russian - built MIG-15 fighters in encounters’ during the day ! A total of 26 enemy aircraft were either destroyed, .probably destroyed or damaged, he added. The spokesman said the report is based on information received after a Tokyo communique which! reported 33 enemy aircraft destroved or damaged. In addition to the two B-298 lost, several other bombers were damaged, but managed to return safely to their bases, he said.

Lack of Interest In City Rapped

Robert W. Matthews. Republican candidate from the Third District for City Council, urged young people to take more interest in government at a Ninth Ward Young Republican Club meeting last night. An accountant with Eli Lilly & '0.. Mr. Matthews is a veteran of World War II. He deplored the lack of interest in politics and city government, pointing to the Pen-, dergast thachine in Kansas City as an example of lethargy on the part of voters.

He advocated a clean and effclient city government. stressing the need for wage increases for, policemen and firemen. He con-: demned the “politically ridden police set-up” in the city, charging that morale in the department is at a dangerous ebb. Mr. Matthews is a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Marion County World War II organization, Scottish Rite and Shrine.
