Confusion Reigns In Mayoralty Races

The first week of the mayoralty campaign disclosed confusion in the ranks of both Republican and Democratic parties here over| who's going to support whom and why, Centralized forces around GOP County Chairman John W. Similar confusion prevails among Democratic Party workers, in the battle between Mayor Bayt) and George E. Sheriff James Cunningham left office last January.
Splintered Away
But early in the game, powerful forces within the regular Demo-! cratic machine began splintering away from regular organization control and started looking for a candidate to oppose Mayor Bayt. Long before the Mayor an-| nounced he would run for the nomination, the anti-Bayt forces, rallying against City Hall domination of the party, brought out Mr. Freyn and built their campaign from leaders within the regular party machine. ‘Ward bosses and precinct committeemen who flocked to the Freyn camp have been critical of what they describe as Mayor Bayt's “independence” in his appointments or his failure to follow] party organization advice in City Hall affairs. The anti-Bayt movement is tile) more than a hangover from the, feuding late Mayor Al Feeney |
