‘Experiment’ Near On Tax Branches
' Meeting Wednesday |
To Formulate Plan |
State Treasurer William L.| Fortune's far-reaching proposal to establish separate branch offices of the Depart ment of Revenue in every county has
reached the planning stage. + Gov. Revenue Board will meet Wédnes- : day to formulate plans for “an ~#xperiment” designed to see how the program works. Under Mr, Fortune's plan, the state could create tax offices in every county, allowing Hoosiers to pay all their state taxes and purchasé auto licenses in one place, The program, described by Mr. Fortune as “bringing the government closer to the people,” is expected to raise more revenue and be more convenient for the public. Because the proposal distribution of auto licenses and plates, now Secretary of State Leland Smith, there has been much speculation that “the politicians will kill the program.”
Secretary to Attend However, Mr. Smith has indicated he is willing to co-operate in the experiment “in the interests of better serving the people.” As a result, Mr. Smith has been invited to attend the State Rev-
enue Board meeting. He is not.
a member, Commissioner of Revenue Conn J. Sterling also will attend the meeting with his assistant, Gross Income Tax Director James M. Probst.
Some Skeptical
Not all members of the Revenue Board are enthusiastically behind the program. State Auditor Frank Millis is reported to be skeptical about the proposal, and Gov. Schricker has not committed himself. - The only other member, Mr. Fortune, likes his own proposal fine. .Many Statehouse observers first openly scoffed at the plan when the new State Treasurer made the suggestion at the organization meeting of the State Revenue Board last week. Now, however, after two local newspapers have supported the plan editorially and state officials have shown an interest in the program, Statehouse personnel believe the proposal will take shape soon. : The Finance Board is expected fo set up the program in two or three counties on an experimental basis.
