Urges New Center For Auto Bureau |
Group Says Statehouse Setup ‘Intolerable’ | The State Senate Committee in-| vestigating the Bureau of.Motor| Vehicles today recommended that the bureau be removed from the Statehouse basement. Winding up a two-day session] here, the committee said that working conditions in the base-|
iment of ‘the Statehouse were “in-| The committee also blasted the lack of security in the; basement, where the license applications and automobile files are out in the open. Committee’ members said the vast operation of the bureau was, go great that they had decided to continue the investigatiqn until the next session of the state legis-| lature, in 1953. State Sén. Von A. Eichhorn! (D. Uniondale), chairman of the committee, said the Senate prob-! ers were agreed that the present bureau, under Director Clyde Black, was “operating efficiently.” ‘Mess Goes Back’
The “muddled mess” of the bureau's files, said said Sen. Eichfinro, “goes 'way back.”
The committee was not critical! of..the administration of former Secretary of State Charles Fleming, Democrat, who was in charge of the buerau's operations. It merely stated that there was a “tremendous backlog” of applications to- be processed when the new administration came in. The committee heard testimony from numerous thorities. includeing State Purchasing Agent Walter Mybeck and officials ‘of the Board of Ac-| ¢ounts and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Bath Testifies In addition to conferring with Gov. Schricker yesterday, the committee also heard testimony from former Republican Secretary of State Thomas Bath, who served under Gov. Gates. 3 The committee requested all persons who testified to submit written statements supplementing their oral testimony. In this way the committee hoped to get a better picture of the bureau's defects. The committee quoted present state officials as saying that the bureau will be in “top working order” before the end of the year.
Queen for a Day Seats Are Scarce
Higher mathematics show that Your chances of seeing the Queen for a Day radio show at the Murat Theater Apr. 19 and 20 are pretty slim. The theater's Egyptian Room. where the broadcast will be staged, holds 2000 people. The show will be here for two days
with a total of 4000 available’
seats.
To date, WIBC, over which the
show is carried locally, has received more than 5500 mail order ticket requests. A little arithmetic shows that 1500 are. going to be left sitting - on the -curb at broadcast time. i But there's still hope. If some of the ticket holders don’t show up, their seats will- be filled by anyone interested anough to loiter around the theater. Emcee Jack Bailey also will stage a nonbroadcast version of the show at 4 p. m. Apr. 20 at the Home Show in the Manufac-
turers Building at the Fairgrounds. Ball State Offers
Stepped Up Program
Basic air ROTC courses and an increase in academic offerings have been added to Ball State Teachers College's first summer term which begins June 11. This accelerated program is designed for high school graduates who wish to enter college before being called by the armed services. . The regular term will begin Sept. 10, when there will be offered the usual beginning courses, a continuation of air ROTC, and other college courses started in the summer session by freshmen on the acceleration program.
