As a drafted enlisted man and [later an officer, he was convinced that 17 and 18-year-olds are too young for military service he said Later, however. he pointed out that this wa% the age group of most of the U. S. Marines at the close of the war. Then he argued that the draft age should not be lowered = because the Marines, Navy and Air Force would be ieprived of making selected enlist ments from the 17 and "18-year-old groups. “I lay no claim to the oracular wisdom which some members of the armed services committee evidently feel they have Acquired by spending 10. 20 and 30 years : listening to the generals and ad-
mirals,”” Mr. Crumpacker said sarcastically. The committee is headed by
Rep. Carl Vinson (D. Ga.), who is* serving his 20th term in the house.
