Jordan College's Opera

Performance Is Found Wanting |
By Henry Butler
Last night’ s opening of *“ duced by the Jordan College
The Tales of Hoffmann,” of Music opera department
drew a good crowd to the Athenaeum.
This version of Offenbach’s charming fantasy, repeated at 8:15 p. m. today, is Jordan's most ambitious
production since Leola Turner assumed direction of the
school's opera department. And I wish TI could say the
good intentins have been . realized. Unfortunately, they haven't been, and so this report is bound to be gloomy. But first it's essenial to absolve from blame. the students _participating. They do. their best against unequal odds. For one thing, the.score calls for more opera-trained singers than Jordan evidently was able to supply. For
another thing, the most competent!
Singers, like John Rooney in the licult tenor role of Hoffmann, ave dishearteningly poor support from orchestra and chorus. There appeared to be no correlation between Director

Leonard's time and the a¢tual tonal output. Passage work of more than gram-mar-school difficulty invariably
(was out of tune.
This general sourness and in-
eptitude of the Jordan orchestra
is nothing new. I.can’'t believe it's necessary, and 1 think something drastic ought to be done about it. When a schoo! venture like “The Tales of Hoffmann” enters the competitive semi - professional field, all directors concerned must be prepared to compete with directors elsewhere who do these things well. Not Professional Level
The opera chorus, trained by Richard Whittington, may suffered somewhat from the Athenaeum’s dead acoustics. stage, and with full throttle, the choristers were ragged in cues and! deficient in volume.
