But She Finds

Time for Recital By HENRY BUTLER Joan Caldwell, fifth-year student at Herron Art School, ds the rare kind of painter who has arrived at_canvas via keyboard. Miss Caldwell, who has been playing the piano sthce she was 3, had to make a difficult decision in 1944, the year she was graduated from Shortridge. In characteristically serious 3% words accompanied by humorous expression. —she—explaimed to me; “The time came when it would have been necessary to devote all my time to music. But I've always liked to paint and draw, and so 1 decided to study at Herron.” _ Previously, had studied piano here with Bomar Cramer, and she was just beginning a five-year stretch of commuting § to Chicago: for lessons with Rudolph Ganz, head of the Chicago College of Music and former conductor of the St. Louis Symphony and of the New York Philharmonic’s children concerts. Praised Her Work Dr. Ganz Has praised her work, and has tried to persuade her to give up graphic for pianistic art. But Miss Caldwell has set her heart on degrees—mot just the bachelor of fine arts she will get from Herron next June, but eventually a doctor's degree. “I have to get a doctor's de-| gree, since my sister has a doc- mained pianissimo
