Aunt |dentifies Thayer's Picture

Chalfin' Trial In Closing Stages

By Uniged P TIPTON" Dna Piiur. 20 An aunt today established identity

of the body of Albert M. Thayer, 47, former Indianapolis city attorney, in the murder trial of James E. Chalfin, 18. Mrs. Emma‘Olive Aughinbaugh, 3510 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis, viewed photographs of thie body found last June 10 along a lonely Hamilton County road and identified .them as pictures of her nephew. The identification was the state’s formality of establishing a basic factor in the trial. The state was expected to complete its case by late this afternoon in the trial of the third of three youths accused in bludgeon slaying. Only six witnesses remained to be called at the noon recess, Trial in 4th Day As the trial entered its fourth day, the courtroom was full with some curious standing against the walls. Chalfin’s mother ‘and stépfather were missing from the defense table for the first time. The state introduced exhibits over defense objection and passed photographs and articles of clothing among the jurors. Miss Frances Neal, Indiana's only woman prosecutor, sent witnesses to the stand yesterday in rapid succession to build up the state’s case against Chalfin.-. Worth Caylor, formen deputy sheriff, testified he found a man’s ring at the scene of the slaying. ‘Lost Ging’ He said later, when he was helping return Chalfin, Carrol Dooley and Earl Michael Kelly to Indiana from Missouri, where the three were arrested, that Chalfin remarked he had lost a ring. Other witnesses who testified yesterday were state police detec-

tive Kenenth Wines; deputy coro-|

ner Charles Coaltrin; state police

technician Charles Epperson; for-! mer deputy sheriff Lem Faucett,|

and Frank Edwards, who discovered Mr. body. Miss Neal said in her opening statement she would prove Chalfin guilty of first degree murder, but she did not mention any penalty.
