Glamour Group In Times Sewing Contest Popular

Evening Clothes, 'At Home' Fashions And Play Togs Simple to Execute

The glamour group of The Times National Sewing Contest always attracts numerous entries.

This year, since evening clothes, “at home” fashions and play togs are simple to execute, more entries are expected than ever before. One of the newest and most glamorous revivals in spring fashfons is the formal evening gown, beautifully soft and feminine, made from resplendent fabrics. There are many possibilities -for luxury designs this year. Gowns are made with yards and yards of net over net; filmy chiffon over rustling taffeta; sophisticated shimmering satins. Skirts are slim or bouffant, floor length or trailing.

By OSWALD JACOBY THE proper method of scoring at a canasta tournament is much the same as the scoring at a bridge progressive. This brings up a much debated question. ‘Do you count only your own score, or do you count the difference between your score and that of your opponents?” Let's begin with fundamentals. . In a Serious Tournament, You Count Only Difference Between Your Score, Opponents

you get your 4000 points—or do you get only the difference of 1000 points?

» on ” " o " MOST social players like to score the full 4000 points. In a real tournament, however, you would score only the difference of 1000 points. Your opponents would go forward to the next round with a score of minus 1000 points. The fairness of the real tournament rule can be seen if you imagine that at another table the score is 4800 points for one side and 4900 points for the other side. If the full score is carried forward, the loser at the other table gets 4800 points for losing-—while you get only 4000 points for winning at your table. It must be unfair for a loser to get a better score than a winner. However, this is a question that should be settled by the tournament director or by the committee that sponsors the tournament, If most of the players are ‘‘social” players and if no serious

claim to a championship is made in the tournament, there is no harm in letting the players score their full amounts. If it's a serfs ous tournament, however, the official rule should be followed. o s ” 5 os = i If THE plus-and-minus rule is followed, it is customary to set a limit to the amount that can be won in any single round.

A limit of 3000 points is ample. When the margin of victory in any round is more than that, only the limit of 3000 points is added to the score of the winners.
