The Discard Pile Is Not ‘As Important In Three-Pack Game
By OSWALD JACOBY THE discard pile does not mean as much at samba as at canasta. Even if you never pick up a pile, your hand still gains one card per turn. This is ample to give you and your partner the two canastas that you need in order to meld out. During the early part of a hand, a substantial discard pile is worth fighting for. Such a pile may enable you to make several canastas Instead of merely two; or it may give you a good chance for samba. 2 Toward the end of a hand even a fairly good-sized discard pile may be more of a hindrance than a heip. It is bound to contain several useless cards so that
your play for out is delayed.
