We, the Women— Career Is-Not Enough For Well-Rounded life...
= By RUTH MILLETT
A
30 or more hasn't found a ‘husband. It's good, sensible
advice and it comes from a career woman who knows what she is talking about. >
rather the woman who works from graduation to grave. She is going to become ever more commonplace and oy she isn’t a rarity even now. “Tell her not to let her job become - her only interest in life. Job and sleep are not enough, If there's no husband by 30, ] then the working woman must (if she is to % remain well-rounded instead - of becoming & neurotic) begin right then to put something into her life besides the job and a bit of social life that revolves around that job, and sleep. “It could be working with children, It could be studying, learning—becoming an expert on something. The greatest men who have ever lived always studied—to the end of their lives. fn #8 8 8 & » “IT COULD BE PAINTING—seriously, or music—seriously. But whatever it is, it had better be something done as seriously and conscientiously as her luckier sisters do their homemaking. Otherwise, she’ll end up like hundreds I meet every year, in little jobs as well as big careers. They are the ones who always stay overtime, who always take work home, who discuss the job endlessly and who, at 40, are bitter about life, uncertain of themselves and generally neurotic. “You can always spot them. They never listen. They just talk. And they run to doctors like mad. They usually think the world is going to the dogs, the people in it a mean lot. They hate all younger women who threaten their security—because they have built all of their security on that one big or little job. “Tell them books and movies are not enough. They all need some all-absorbing work to do (besides the job) as absorbing as the married career woman finds home and husband.” All I can add to that is: Think it over, For it is well worth thinking about. And it comes from a career woman who knows career women.
