In the meantime, if he did not know how to speak English he must learn. He must also learn the history, the habits, the way of life of the country he ‘wishes to adopt.
To aid him in this process, here, as in most’ major cities, citizenship and English claSses are conducted for the foreignborn adult. They are designed
to acquaint the immigrant with
the early history of the American colonies, the period of independence, the first form of government, the Constitution, how it was written and its amendments.
Taught in Schools
These classes, held from September through .June, are taught by teachers of the ex-
tended school service department of the Indiagapolis Publice Schools. 4 : « One such teacher is Mrs. Naomi Stewart. For over 14 years with charts, books, blackboard and chalk, she has been aiding the immigrant in adjusting to a new home in a new land. Over this period of time she has taught and helped over 2500 persons in classes ranging in size from eight to 28.
