won a total of 19,499 votes in the district which had gone to the Democrats by 26,000 votes in last November's general election. Mr. Schendel's. defeat was a blow to the political future of Morris Shenker, criminal lawyer) | who has”a virtual monopoly on the legal business of St. Louis’ gambling and underworld society. Mr. Bakewell had pegged his campaign on “Shenkerism,” charging that Mr. Schendel was his “handpicked” candidate. Mr, Shenker overrode the demands of organized labor to nominate Mrs. Leonor Sullivan, widow of Rep. John B. Sullivan, whose death in January created the vacancy.
