U. S. Clamps Down On ‘Price Gouging’ WASHINGTON, Mar. 8 (UP) «New government restrictions on civilian use of tin are expected goon which may eliminate canned beer, officials said today. The government also is ex_pected to take over as sole purchaser of foreign tin for all U, 8. consumption, The actions are expected as a result of the tin shortage and! “price gouging" which a Senate subcommittee says the United States is suffering at the hands of foreign tin suppliers, some our Allies, The new restrictions on civilian tin are expected tq cut deeply into, if. not eliminate, the use of the metal for canning beer, nonfood products, and pet foods beginning Apr. 1. Hits Key Items The restrictions also are expected to cut further the use of “tin for such items as tooth paste, cosmetics and some pharmaceuticals, : : In January the government limited use of tin for such items, and cut the use of tin for eanning beer and pet foods by ‘10 per cent, effective last Mar. 1. . Yesterday the government ordered a 20 per cent cut in steel supplies that will affect production of autos, household goods, radios and ‘television sets. It also rolled back prices of shortening and salad ofl one to two cents a| pound.

train.
They warned they would ‘get tough’ {if the greenbacks were
not’ returned voluntarily. Hundreds of persons staged a short-lived “gold rush” Tuesday when the mail shag was ground under the wheels of the train from which is was tossed. Scores of them harvested a bonanza.
Bulk Found in Hurry
The bulk of the money, which was being shipped from the St, Louis Federal Reserve Bank to a bank here, was picked up by frantic postal workers or turned over to them immediately by other finders. An additional $600 was returned yesterday “We're trying to coax the money in by advertising that it's a crimina. offense to keep it)” As. sistant Postmaster Frank Bray sald today. “If that doesn't work, we'll have to get tough. “Finders aren't keepers in the eyes of the law,” he added. “Keeping this money is just as much a
mall thet, legally speaking. as if.
a person walked in-and rifled the post office.”
One Returned $340 Mr, Bray said nearly a score of people had turned in bills they picked up. One returned $340. “We think we've got al the money that, was chewed up by the train's wheels and we we're still $6100 short,” ‘he said. “It must have been picked up by someone.” The bills, in $1, $5, $10 and $20 were believed
marked in 8t. Louis, he said, and shouldn't be difficult to trace if anyone tried to spend them. “But I guess some people will get away with it anyway,” he sald. “Some always do.”

that the gold purchase price will remain at $35 an ounce, which it has been since January, 1934. The announcement was prompted by the International Monetary Fund's move to halt the illegal flow of gold to hoarders.
The fund, apparently alarmed by excessive world sales of gotd for use in jewelry, art and in: dustry, has ordered its staff to consult with officials of member nafiong to find more effective methods for curbing illegal gold moverhent, The fund said yesterday that the recent increase in gold purchases for such uses indicates “that at least a part of it finds its way to private hoards, conArary to the gold policy of the fund established in June, 1947." How much gold has found its was into private hands probahly never will be known because the law inthe United States and many other ¢ountries prohibits private gwnership of the metal. = During the past 14 months more. than $2.3 billion in gold has flowed out of the Unitéd States.
