Santa Anita Handicap Won By Moonrush

* Takes Early Lead In $100,000 Race

By ALEX KAHN United Press Sports Writer

SUNDAY, MAR. 4, 1951.

ARCADIA, Cal., Mar, 3—Moonrush, a front-running $peedster,| ran away with the $100,000 Santa! Anita handicap today, getting out| in front early and then fighting off the game, challenge. of Next Move to win by a head. The California-bred son of Hunters Moon IV could credit his victory to that master jockey, Johnny Longden, who took the swift 5-year-old out in front just out of the gate and, except for a momentary challenge when Next Move drew up, kept the brown | gelding going to win the top at-| traction of the winter racing season, Not a Fast Track

Sudan, who had stayed close to! the top of the field of 14 horses, finished third behind Next Move, and Repeluz came up for fourth. The race was run on a good track but not a fast one because of rains earlier in the week. Moonrush turned the mile and a quarter in 2:02 3/5, two and threefifths seconds off the track record set last year by Noor when he won the same race and decfeated Citation. Never considered a distance horse, Moonrush got off at odds! of slightly better than 10 to 1! and paid $22.90, $11.50 and $8.40. ! Next Move returned $6.30 to) place and $4.50 to show, and Sudan, coupled with Nocopo as an entry, returned $7.70 to show. Some two hours before the featured race, a large share of the 50,000 fans was thrown into an uproar when Paul H. Salzburg, Calexico, ‘Cal., entered the box of movie magnate L. B. Mayer and threatened to throw a “dynamite bomb” into a cowering crowd of film celebrities and racing fans.

Yildiz Collects $50000 Flamingo

Closes Hialeah's Best Track Year

By United Press MIAMI, Fla. Mar. 3-Yildiz,

best season in five years. Yildiz, whose name means| “star” in Turkish, took the lead| coming into the stretch and held off the fast closing Timely Reward to win by a neck. Anyoldtime was third, another length and a half back, and a nose ahead of Royal Mustang. i

Not Named for Derby | Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords doesn’t have Yildiz mominated for the Kentucky Derby. But he is] named for the Preakness and Belmont, the other two stones in| the triple crown. Yildiz, who won an overnight race a week ago to gain a start-| ing berth in the Flamingo, proved, the consistent member of the Hi-| aleah 3-year-old band, which had | played turnabout in whipping] each other. | He was the second choice of the, 29.221 fans, largest crowd of the 40-day Hialeah, meeting, Tetra. | ing $7.60, $4.70 and $4.30. Mrs. Wallace Gilroy’s Timely Reward | paid $7.50 and $4.60, and 'W. M.| Peavy’s Anyoldtime $10.50. Yildiz’s time was a slow| 1:511/5, but he picked up six| pounds from his previous win and carried 117 in his first stakes vic-| tory. !
