undermine the nation’s ability to defend the Western Hemisphere,
Or. Kenneth W. Thompson, ‘a specialist in American foreign policy; said the Truman doctrine is a “vast commitment which no nation has the power to fulfill.”
He is co-author of “Principles and Problems of International Politics” published in 1950. He said he agreed with ex-Pres-ident Hoover that the “national interest” calls for bolstering defenses first in the Western Hemisphere. However, he said he also favored defense of Western Europe as outlined by John Foster Dulles —t0 prevent any one nation from controlling Western European industrial might. - If Russia seized this area, he said, it then would be in position to train its sights on South America, Defense of the hemisphere is the nation’s primary “national in-| terest,” He asserted. He assailed as “fallacious” the Truman doctrine premise that any nation, even those having no strategic value, should be defended to. the death. This means the U. S. could dissipate its strength in the “national interest” of other nations-—de-fending a global defense line 20,000 miles long. Copyright, 1951, for The Indianapolis Times
