A head was added if necessary to test the effect of exhaling different gases. Only one-tenth to one-quarter as many mosquitoes alighted on the dummy dressed in white as on the one dressed in black. This was true no matter how light it was during the tests. Green was less attractive than red or blue, and light reds and blues were less than half as attractive as the darker shades of the same colors. .

The hope is that the new vita-| min “will act as a check on the action, of aminopterin so that| healthy tissues are protected while the wild growth of the white blood cells is stopped. The vitamin has been given the cryptic name of the “citrovorum factor.” It is called “CF” for short. Its name needs explanation. Weren't Seeking Vitamins

The Wisconsin group of investigators that discovered vitamin CF weren't even looking for vitamins. They were studying amino acids, the chemical building blocks out of which proteins are constructed. : Bacteria require amino acids for growth just as do human beings. Because bacteria are easier to deal with than humans, the scientists were trying the effects of various amino acids on a type of bacteria known as the citrovorum. Their first discovery was that the citrovorum bacteria refused to grow.on a diet of pure amino acids but did very well when|’ liver extract was added to the bill of fare. Consequently they set about to find out what the essential factors were in the liver extract. Eventually they put their finger on two of them. ‘ One was folic acid, a wellknown component of the vitamin B complex. Folic acid, which also occurs in yeast and in green plants, now is being used successfully to treat certain types of anemia. Previously Unknown The other substance in the liver extract turned out to be a previously unknown substance which proved to be thousands of times more potent than folic acid in promoting the growth of the bacteria. It is this substance which now has been named the citrovorum factor or CF. ' Researches continuing at Wisconsin indicate that folic acid is converted into CF in the human body and that another vitamin, namely vitamin C or ascorbic acid, plays a role in this conver-
