Landmark of Madison

St. Michael's Church, oldest public building in Madison, Pioneer Railroad Project Linked With Early Church

Tradition Says Stone From Cut Through Hill Went Into St. Michael's Structure

Times State Service MADISON, Feb. 24—8t. Michael’s Church in Madison has a history closely knit with the industrial and romantic background of the quiet and picturesque little river town. Nestled under the towering Ohio River hills at the west end of Third St, St. Michael's is the oldest public building in historic Madi son, and is the pioneer Catholic church to this Indiana-Ohio River country. When the Mammoth Internal Improvement Bill was passed by the Indiana legislature in 1836, the way was opened for the building of the Madison and Indianapolis Railroad. Construction of the railroad in 1837 brought a large number of Irish Catholic laborers to Madison and its vicinity. Although there had been several Catholic families in Madison, and the bennings of St. Michael's parish te back to 1817, the nearest churches were at Cincinnati and Louisville, ~~ Influx of Irish

With influx of the Irish newcomers, the need for a Catholic church: became urgent, and on June 15, 1838 the present site was SSE deeded to Bishop Simon Gabriel SHE Brute. first Bishop of Indiana, by a man named Meclntire, for the ® purpose of erecting a Roman Catholic church. cana The deed was signed by Moody Sis Park, then Mayor of Madison, and can be seen “today in the parish museum. Local historians believe the tract originally was procured in a trade involving the present railroad terminal in Indianapolis. At that
