By EMMA RIVERS MILNER, Times Church Editor

A POLICEMAN and a team.

Little episodes of real life dramatize this fact almost

daily in Indianapolis.

But it was vividly borne out in the case of a young girl

who tormented her parents. home for whole nights at a/ time. No one in the family

knew where she was. On eve-

nings when she did return, it was late, Her father and mother decided her conduct was not surprising when they saw the kind of companions she chose. The Juvenile Aid Division of the Police Department discovered the family's plight. They talked it over with Dr. Grover IL. Hart-| man, social service director of the Church Federation, Dr. Hartman referred the JAD to a certain South Side minister, The friendly parson showed great willingness to assist the police, He visited the family, noted that the members were] comfortable enough financially] and normally fond of each other. | But they had drifted completely! away from the church. Smoke to the fire horse! The | challenge was all the pastor needed. He used his talents to draw them into his own congregation. The young daughter now regularly attends the young people's meeting and the whole household enjoys both the worship and social life of the church. This thumbnail sketch illustrates the chief goal of Dr. Hartman’s social service department, he says, His department strives to create through co-operation between the police, the social

agencies of the city and county

and the churches, » . V WHEN you hear the amazing stories Dr. Hartman has to tell,

Then there was the 11-year-old | gon of churchgoing parents who| got completely out of hand. The boy was stealing. staging temper tantrums, The bewildered father) and mother decided they had bet- | ter send the child to a correctional institution, Through the parents’ minister, Dr. Hartman referred the case to the trained counselors of the! Family Service Association. He explained that additional help could be gained from the Marion County Child Guidance Clinic lo-| cated on the grounds of Norways Sanatorium. ; » » » | THE CHURCH Federation Soclal Bervice Department also offers ministers an opportunity to
