Casualty Lists Reasonably Accurate, Officials Contend

WASHINGTON, D. C,, Feb. 23 DN)—Estimating enemy casIties in any war is neither easy br foolproof, the Army admits. But the military insists its fig-| . es on Korea are reasonably acate. Methods Used

Btressing that its figure is alays an estimate, the Army says computes casualties by (1) an n-the-ground count and (2) a pmplicated pooling of evaluation reports from several sources. A formula, based upon exprience in World War II andi rgely secret, is used to compute nemy losses when the actual pint isn’t possible, as in the! pse of a defensive retreating ac-| on: i The reason for secrecy, the rmy adds, is obvious—if the emy knew the methods, he ould contrive to create false pnclusions. Here is a step-by-step picture of jow the reports are collected: In each 24-hour period, the batlion operations (8-3) and intelgence (8-2) officers cubmit a reort to regimental headquarters.
