Doctors Devote Time

To Potential Workers By DAVID M. NICHOL

BERLIN, Feb, 22 (CDN)-—The relentless gressures within the So; | viet zone of Germany leave littlex room for the aged and infirm.

Doctors say {it is difficult to, supply them with needed medi-| cines and almost impossible to arrange their admission to hospitals even in extreme cases.

The doctors themselves . are pressed to save their time and energies for the treatment of younger persons who still are potential workers. | I was told of the case recently | of a 60-year-man in eastern Ber-| lin whose wife, equally’ elderly, suffered from a serious stomach ailment. Calls Nearby Hospital One night her condition became much aggravated. The man called a nearby hospital where the doc-| tor first asked the age of the patient. When he was told she| was 60, the doctor said he was not permitted to leave the hospi-! tal building. In desperation the man called | the numbers of three other doc-| tors. Each time he was asked the patient's age. When he replied, he was told in turn that one of the| doctors was out of the. city, that another could not be reached by, telephone, and that the third was! busy but. would come later. | The doctor didn’t appear and] the man called an ambulance. Again he was asked about his wife's age. A day and a half later he still was waiting for the ambu- | lance when he found a doctor who! would take the case. Prescribes Treatment | Nor were his troubles at an end. | The doctor prescribed a treat-! ment, not exceptional but requir-| ing ingredients not normally pro-|
