De Paur's Group Features Unusual, Expressive Singing
21—A rain-braving throng
the concert by De Paur's Infantry Chorus.
This event on the auditor
ium series was remarkable for
finely disciplined and expressive singing and for choice of
unusual material.
Capt. Leonard De Paur and !-
Clarence Jacobs, his assistant conductor, have trained their
ensemble to sing equally well modern musie, with its harmonic difficulties; the old choral classics agd a great variety of North, Céntral and South American Negro music, In last night's program, the modern material came first, with William Schuman’s “Truth Shall
Deliver,” Ulysses Kay's "Come Away Death,” "Paul Creston’s “Here Is Thy Foot Stool” and
Dai-keong Lee's “On Journeys’ as an opening group. For all its expressiveness and technical excellence, the modern group struck last night's hearers with less impact than the three Brazilian folk songs, arranged by Gao Gurgel and Capt. De Paur, which followed. The second of
those, “Casinha Peguenina.” with!
an extraordinarily beautiful tenor solo by Luther Saxon, was a rare experience. And the “Calypso” from Trinidad, “Ugly Woman,” which concluded Group II, was first-rate comedy. Of the four World II songs which followed, I found the De
Paur arrangement of Frank Loes-|
ser's “Roger Young” the most im-

pressive. Most previous {treatments I've heard of that song have made it mechanically and rather irritatingly dirge - like. Capt. De Paur and his singers gave it new meaning and dignjty. Five Negro spirituals and work songs and a group of religious compositions, concluding with Malotte's “The Lord's Prayer,” followed intermission. The folk material, North and South American, carried heavy emotional freight, In that realm of human expression, both words and music reflect hardship and grim injustice. Yet out of suffering has come a poignant kind of beauty never equalled in any other folk music, It's easy to overdo the emotion in performance. Capt. De Paur and his singers choose the harder and the wiser way of conveying feeling with artistic restraint and constant care for technique.
Besides Mr. Saxon, whose tenor voice is quite phenomenal, golo-
ists who contributed a lot included George Marshall, baritone; liam Stewart, tenor, Ferguson, haritone. It was Mr. Ferguson, in “Calypso” number, who brought
