Then, whenever you (or your partner) later try to make a ppoper initial meld, you need 10 points more than usual. gs» ®. x = FOR example, suppose you need 50 points for the initial meld. After drawing from the stockpile, you hold: 2-A-K-Q-10-9 6-6-6 5-5-5 You absentmindedly think that the deuce is a joker, and you try to meld it with a pair of fives. Mind you, this would be a very poor play even if the deuce really were a joker—but that's anothen story. a - : Naturally, the opponents how! when you put down 5-5-2, And, just as naturally you see your mistake, ; What should you do? Easier To Take And To Understand Now
A BETTER remedy would be to pick up .the 5-5-2 and put them, back in your hand. (This is perfectly legal and proper. You are ‘not absolutely obliged to make your meld sufficient.)
Now, the next time you or your partner makes the initial | meld in that hand, the meld must consist of at least 60 points |
(10 points more than the tisual 50 points).
This would have no effect on the next hand. On the next hand | you would need the normal amount, depending on what your score
happened to be at the beginning of the hand.
What is the penalty if you make an insufficient meld twice in the same hand? Legally, the penalty is that you need an additional 20 points (10 points for each error). In actual practice, your opponents would probably ask you to keep your mind on the game or to take up tiddlywinks,

Asks About Showers
A case in point is a rather desperate question from Warren J., a prospective bridegroom:

asked on wedding etiquet and prospective—whether too many prospective brides and bridegrooms aren't more concerned with details than fundamentals. Arrangement of details crop up, of course, in the best-laid plans. But my advice, with few exceptions, is to let common sense and consideration for your chosen mate always be your giudes. What is exactly proper isn't

Obviously, Warren J. doesn’t want to, and in many instances he doesn’t have to. (I've never heard of men attending bridal showers and know of no exact rule on the subject). But obA : viously, from the tone of the : question, his bride expects him to go ‘or else.”
Now here’s an opportunity for *® Warren to please his bride-to-be by compromising. If the shower is an evening affair where other men will be, naturally he will attend (much as he dislikes the idea.)
Should Consider
But on the other hand, if he’s the reticent type, the bride should take that into consideration and explain to shower- ja giving friends how he feels. Socially, he’s under no obligation to go. Another question which might point to some pre-family arguments is the finger on which a man wears his wedding | ring in the double-ring cere- | mony. The bride insists it should be worn on the wedding ring finger as hers is. And the bridegroom thinks a man may wear all rings, including a wedding
