Fear of Facing Life By DR. G. ERNEST THOMAS

HE ‘FEAR of facing life is the thief that steals more worthy dreams and high ideals than any criminal who

ever walked the earth.

It frequently destroys the charice of a happy mar-

riage.

A bachelor uncle came to speak 'to a radiant

young couple at their wedding reception.

“So you are going to live room and both

in one work?” 1 overheard him say. “Yes,” replied the bride, "we will get along somehow.” “Of course, you will," continued the uncle quickly

and positively. Then he became wistful. The young couple were too absorbed in thelr own happiness to notice the change In his voice,

Dr. “I once had the chance for

Thomas

a day like this,” he told me, “but I was afraid to go ahead small wage and what

advancement, It was the biggest mistake I ever made.” y » o A PHYSICIAN stepped into a hospital corridor with me after we had stood together at the bedside of a business execulive,

“That man would not be here if his secretary had destroyed

the morning paper every day

before he had a chance to see it. He is one of the thousands of casualties in this post-war world.”

This man of affairs is brilliant, intelligent, admired by a host of friends, but his fear of facing the world, and the critical international situation. had poured poison into his body. Continued emotional pressure is a common cause of the fears which result in many functional ills from which men suffer,

During the tense days of the 1948 baseball season a player

with a Boston team was sent to |

the hospital suffering from ulcers of the stomach, He was reported to be 12 pounds under weight and a victim of Intense emotional strain. . Day after day the load had increased as the season progressed. Every play became important; every time at bat was a severe test. He was aware that a single mistake might mean the loss, not only of a game, but of a season's work. His

illness was an evidence of the price which any individual may be called upon to pay who lives under such pressure, n ” » THE FEAR of facing life may cause not only disappointment and fallure but, accompanying them, such physical symptoms as ulcers, colitis, high blood pressure, and even heart allments, The price is too great. This conclusion 1s inevitable when we realize that fear is a parasite which can be conquered. Studies have recently been completed which indicate that many industrial, household, and traffic accidents are caused by

the unconscious desire to escape | regarded as |

from a situation dangerous or unpleasant. To be Invotved in an automobile accident, or to be struck by a streetcar, or to maim the hands in a machine, is a poor kind of escape from life, even if it is done unconsciously. How much better it is to learn to understand the fear which is driving us, and to cultivate the means by which that fear may be channeled toward constructive ends. n ” 5 IN MEETING the stern challenge that comes from a fear of facing life it is first necessary to admit that we. are afraid. No good is accomplished by hiding the truth. Jeremiah stands out as one of the noblest figures in the Old Testament. The role of prophet was not easy for him. Jeremiah many times indicated in his writings that he was troubled by fears. But the very fact that he admitted that

view. For those engaged in ordinary, everyday activities, who are finding the pressure more than they can bear, no other system of thought offers a comparable hope. Christianity is an affirmation concerning God. But it is more than that. It is a way of triumphant living, For the Christian, God is not alone the Creator who. supplies the energy by which the sun, the moon, and the stars “are kept in their courses. He supplies also the energy which is the source of all life on the earth. Life is not a destiny which is rigid and unshakable, It is a series of glorious possibilities to heal minds which are afraid out of which we are privileged to face uncertainties is found to shape our future. in right thougnts about the nn 8 meaning of life. It is derived NOT ALL individuals have from. the ability to see life peen endowed with talents by whole. which they can win high honSuch an understanding is best ors or public acclaim. This is the fourth of a series of articles in The Sunday Times by Dr. G. Ernest Thomas, director of spiritual life of the Methodist Church, They are taken from his new book, “Faith Can Master Fear,” just published by Fleming H. Revell Co.

he was afraid gave him a foundation on which he could build a life of faith, After he had acknowledged his weakness he was able to dip into available spiritual reserves, and to go out confidently to meet the challenge of adversity.

» on ” THE MOST satisfying power

while rendering faithful service in lowly positions, The important consideration is the willingness to accept and carry out such obligations as are given

to us. The fear of facing life |

has little power to disturb those

who are consumed with a de- |

gire to serve others. Fear to face life hampers a

countless host of men. They |

have ideals and dreams, but their fears make the realization

of the dreams impossible. They |

allow opportunities, and friendships, and faith to slip away because they are afraid, The answer to such fears is within the reach of all those who desire it.

Face up to your tears; discov- | er the possibilities which God |

has entrusted to you; and then make use of His power to live victoriously.
