can be harboring tragic thoughts, But they are doing just that, Dr. Herman I. Shibler will tell you. Dr. Shibler, superintendent of Indianapolis public schools, mingles constantly with young people. He listens to expressions) of their opinions, serves on discussion panels with them, Naturally, he knows what they're mulling over in their minds. Be-| gides, he has watched two chil-| dren of his own grow to adulthood.

THUS HE urges the churches to rise to the occasion and aid young people in this time of need. “Young people are going through a period of stress now were Dr. Shibler’s words. “They are distressed because they can't gee anything ahead of them but two or three years or longer of military life. They can’t live their lives as they planned and as their parents hoped they would do. “They have a sort of despair, a st of escape attitude,” he continued. “ “Why geét~a job? Why finish high school?’ they are asking. ~ ” » “WE (school teachers and counselors) are working to overcome this. We think a strong faith is so important. “Speaking as a layman in the church and a firm believer in its teachings, I think the churches have a great responsibility in holding up the young person's valuation of himself as an important human being whether in the military service or not. “Our whole Christian doctrine holds that up as does democracy. The two work right together. ~ “Young people must be made to understand that they are not just cogs, that they are important parts of society.

He said that the Army wants the boys and| girls to remain in school as long as possible. “There is more
chance, in that way, of training
them for leadership and to be better citizens.’ “No one is so idealistic as youth, At high school age, they are the greatest idealists they ever will be in their lives, “Young people are incurably re-| ligious.
